Comet Hunting Astronomy Night

Name: Comet Hunting Astronomy Night
Date: March 16, 2013
Time: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
This particular evening was selected because it offers one of the best potential opportunities for viewing Comet PanSTARRS, which was discovered in 2011 by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (PanSTARRS) telescope on Mount Haleakala in Hawaii. After sunset, Comet PanSTARRS will be low in the west near the waxing crescent moon. Comet brightnesses are notoriously difficult to predict. Comet PanSTARRS MSJUNKmay be as bright as some of the sky's brightest stars --or it may require binoculars or a telescope to get a good view. Both types of equipment will be on hand for participants to use.

In addition, the evening's event will include a sky tour of other interesting astronomical objects, including the planet Jupiter, two star clusters, and several prominent constellations.

This event is held near the center of High Bridge where the view of the sky is unobstructed. This location is approximately 1.25 miles from the closest parking lot (River Road parking lot), so please allow ample time to traverse the distance. Be sure to bring drinking water and be prepared to stay out after dark.  For more information contact the park office 434-315-0457
